INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON This is a high Sabbath at the Loma Linda University Church! In fact, this is a high weekend on the Loma Linda University campus! This weekend marks the centennial celebration for the LLU School of Medicine. That’s quite a milestone, isn’t it? One hundred years of educating men and women to go out into the world to work with God in healing the hurts of humanity. Over that period of time, literally tens of thousands of graduates have emerged from this place to go out and further the teaching and healing ministry of Jesus Christ—“to make man whole.” I have chosen what I believe is a most important passage for this Sabbath’s sermon. It may not seem so at first glance, but linger over it and you may come to agree with me. The passage is Matthew 4:23–25. In this passage, Matthew describes the ministry of Jesus as consisting of three simple yet life-changing realities: teaching, preaching and healing. As Jesus went about the Galilean countryside, he occupied his time in doing those three things. As I reflect on this passage, it strikes me that such a ministry is the exact model which Loma Linda University as a whole and Loma Linda University School of Medicine specifically wishes to follow. I must say that it is my hope that as we consider this topic today, we will discover that while the model of Jesus’ ministry fits precisely what the School of Medicine seeks to do, it is a much broader model than only that. It enlarges to be the model for all of our lives and professions. So linger with me over the words of Matthew and celebrate the Jesus who left us footsteps in which to follow! The fall sermon series, entitled, “Why I’m an Adventist,” will be continued next week. For this week, we take a break from that series to celebrate this key event in the life of our university community. God’s very best to you.

MEDITATION The medical school at Loma Linda is to be of the highest order. – Ellen G. White If those who are suffering can be impressed with the fact that Christ is their sympathizing, compassionate Saviour, they will have rest of mind, which is so essential to recovery of health. – Ellen G. White
