Sermon notes:
In our three-part sermon series titled Gospel Basics, we first considered “Where It Begins.” Our experience of the gospel all begins with Jesus’ announcement of the arrival of God’s kingdom—that’s the divine initiative—combined with his call for us to repent and turn toward God. “The time is here! The kingdom of heaven is at hand! Repent and believe the good news!” (see Mark 1:14–15). Then, we took note of
“What Comes Next.” No sooner did Jesus end his announcement of the kingdom than he found four fishermen and said to them, “Follow me.” (see Mark 1:16–20). This is the call to discipleship—a lifelong, life-changing journey with Jesus.
And now today we come to “Where It Leads.” When we repent and accept God’s action on our behalf, and when we then respond to Jesus’ call to follow him, where does it all lead? The simple answer is contained in Jesus’ words: “… and I will make you fish for people.” (see Mark 1:17). In other words, we are now to go and issue the invitation for others to join Jesus in his kingdom venture.
Simply put, God acts—we repent. Jesus calls—we follow. Jesus offers—we invite.
Maybe it’s time we get back to Gospel Basics.
