INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON
Today we begin an eleven-part sermon series entitled, “Letters from the Edge of Eternity.” It is based on Revelation chapters 1–5.
Our world is in a summarily precarious predicament. The global economy sputters (and that’s being kind!); wars rage at different places on the globe; on every hand, hatred and antagonism abound; populations are polarized, with each side demonizing the other; and the actions carried out in the name of God are sufficient to make God weep. And in the midst of it all, the followers of Jesus – the “called out ones,” the church – are sometimes confused as to how to live out God’s love and will in the world. Where can we find help?
The last New Testament epistle, Revelation, offers us help. In the heart of the section that we will study are found the messages to the seven churches. These seven churches were certainly not the only churches in John’s world. There were other churches to whom the Spirit could have inspired him to write. But for some reason, these seven were chosen.
Maybe part of the reason they were chosen is that they embody the kinds of qualities and characteristics that so many local churches exhibit. There is good and there is bad; there is fervor and there is apathy; there is wholeheartedness and there is compromise – all told, it sounds a lot like the churches around Anytown, USA. To these churches, the Spirit of God speaks. In what he communicates, we can find the answers to how we are to live in a fractured world that is perched on the edge of eternity.
I look forward to our weeks together in the early chapters of Revelation. Below you will find a list of the sermon titles, passages and dates. I encourage you to study ahead, and to do so prayerfully.
May God’s eternal tomorrow dawn soon.
