Sermon Notes: Every human being has soul needs that cry out to be met—needs for guidance, for security, for permanence, for fruitfulness. Sometimes we face these needs openly and seek healthy ways to meet them; other times they gnaw at us internally, and we either try to ignore them or meet them in ways that don’t work. It was that reality that a friend of mine, the late Dr. Jerry Davis, spoke of when he said, “Sin is the attempt to meet the legitimate need of the heart in a way that won’t work.” (I’ve often pondered Jerry’s words. I may quote them a number of times throughout this series).

And then we come to the gospel of John, and in John’s gospel, we meet Jesus, the Jewish teacher who refers to Himself as the I Am. No Jewish listener would have missed the unmistakable divine reference in those words. The I Am was the great Yahweh of their ancestors—the God who had led them out of Egyptian slavery, who had brought them into the land of promise, who had spoken in clear terms of the Messiah to come. And now, here was a Nazarene rabbi daring to refer to Himself as the I Am

But not only were there clear messianic implications to His words; there were also promises contained in how He referred to Himself—promises to meet the deepest needs of their souls. Those promises still echo today. He still offers to meet the deepest needs of your soul.

Join us as we probe those claims in this series, All-Sufficient Savior: What Happens When “I Need…” Meets the Great “I Am.”

Randy Roberts,

Senior pastor
