INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON It is so easy—natural, maybe—to begin to think that life is all about us. A student gets his yearbook from high school and immediately peruses it to find out how many times his picture appears. A young woman gets a new computer and immediately opens up Google Earth to look at the house where she lives. An individual suffers through a crisis in life and promptly asks, “Why me?” It is natural to place ourselves at center stage in the play of life. Because of that, when it comes to issues involving God and life and salvation and eternity, it is understandable that we make the assumption that it is all about us. What question, after all, could be more important than “Will I be saved? Where will I spend eternity?” With no intent to diminish the importance of personal salvation or the inestimable value of a human soul, what if it’s not all about us? What if the globe on which we live and the universe in which our globe finds itself is about much more than us? What if we are inestimably important and yet not the central focus of everything that happens? I wonder if the psalmist was thinking along these lines when he wrote, “When I consider the heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” (Psalm 8:3–4, TNIV). I suppose the natural question, then, would be, “Then who is? If we’re not central, then who is?” That is the theme we approach today. It is a theme of such magnitude that it brings everything else in its train. And it is also important (to me) for one more reason: it is one of the reasons—one of the key reasons—why I am a Seventh-day Adventist. God bless you.

MEDITATION It is perilously possible to make our conceptions of God like molten lead poured into a specially designed mold, and when it is cold and hard we fling it at the heads of the religious people who don’t agree with us. – Oswald Chambers
