Sermon Notes:
Celebrities today spend great amounts of time and money building their “brand.” They’ll post a provocative Tweet or stage a public sighting with the intent of keeping their names “out there” and perpetuating their larger-than-life characters. For those of you who have dabbled in social media, it’s difficult to get a large group of people to “follow” you, right? And more difficult than that is getting them all to understand the cause that you are championing. In Jesus’ prayer in John 17, Jesus prays for the masses living before the benefit of social media who chose to follow Christ, but who still needed to learn of His character.
As we conclude with the third part of Jesus’ “closing prayer,” which he prayed the night before his crucifixion, we consider what Jesus’ concerns were for the greater group—the group beyond his inner core of disciples—the crowd of all the believers.
Jesus desperately wanted this larger group to see and know something that would change them completely. What it was and how it could unite them is the topic we explore today. Pray that you will also see and know it as God impresses your heart through this message.
