Sermon notes:
Radical! is the title of the series we begin today, a series on the epistle of 1 John. 1 John is the epistle dealing with the centrality of the incarnate Christ; it is also an epistle that focuses unflinchingly on love.
The Oxford English Dictionary lists a number of different meanings for the word radical. Included are these two:
• “representing or supporting an extreme section of a political party: [for example,] a radical American activist.”
• “of or relating to the root of something in particular: [such as in] mathematics … the root of a number or quantity,” or, in “botany, of or springing direct from the root or stem base of a plant.”
In other words, radical can describe a person who is an extremist. But it can also describe the process of getting to the root of something.
In this series, we are going to encounter both. We are going to go to the root of what following Jesus is all about. However, in the process of going to the root of it
all, we will be challenged to become radical for Jesus.
1 John is not a letter for the timid. But I believe it is time for us to read its words and take to heart its sentiments. Join me in the journey toward becoming radical!
