Sermon notes:
The words “Follow me” cannot be separated from the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are among the first words Jesus speaks in his public ministry. He speaks them repeatedly. He speaks them to people in dramatically different stations in life. He speaks them at the beginning of his ministry and at the end of his time on earth. Simply put, he never gets very far from uttering those two simple words — “Follow
me.” The call to follow Jesus is the call to discipleship. And discipleship is a lifelong, life-changing journey with Jesus.
Today’s sermon is the second in a three-part series titled, Gospel Basics. We are spending our time in the early verses of Mark’s gospel, listening to the first public words Jesus spoke in his ministry. Those first words were a beacon to the first listeners, lighting the way toward life in Christ. They can be the same for us today—if we will heed them.
Will you listen today to that most basic invitation of Jesus … “Follow me”?
